For the bash giving, party loving, wildly entertaining types – gifts from around the Central Coast (and beyond) that will surely delight. Cheers!
Hello Labor Day Weekend, Good Bye Summer…but wait. The fun never ends here on the Central Coast. Our local retailers and purveyors are always cooking up new, fun and ah-mazing to-dos to fill up our weekly calendar. Kick the holiday weekend off right with a visit to La Rouge Boutique de Lingerie in downtown San Luis Obispo where owner Farani will be showcasing the latest collection from jewelry company Virgins, Saints and Angels. Plus receive 15% off your purchase.
On Friday, bid farewell to summer with a refreshing and complimentary taste of Pithy Wine Co’s latest addition to the Soda Works family: Cream Soda. The team will be celebrating with delish Cream Soda Floats and sampling some other local goodies, like these.
And end the evening with a visit to downtown San Luis Obispo’s newest fine jeweler Ian Saude. Wine, snacks by the Neon Carrot and yummy desserts. Yes, please! Also be sure to check out the latest and divine collection from Alexis Bittar.
Last year someone was kind enough to give my office a sampling of these treats from the Brown Butter Cookie Company and since I have become a total fan! Hand-rolled, brown butter cookies each lovingly topped with a pinch of sea salt? Yes, please! How could it become more delightful? Well the company is locally based in Cayucos, ran by two sisters and has a sweet following of retailers in the area. If you can’t make it to Cayucos, be sure to stop by 7 Sisters Trading Company in Santa Margarita and pick up a batch. How sweet it is.
Don’t let the dismal gloom otherwise known as our current Central Coast summer fool you, a great sunscreen is still a daily necessity. Over the years I have tried many… some unflatteringly greasy and some I swear just did not work (a full day of constant sunscreen application resulting in a lovely tomato-esque hue doesn’t make me a believer).
As a daily defense she suggested the uber light weight SPF 15 Silk Mist, great for almost every skin type under the sun, pun intended. This spray sunscreen has special technology that prevents the sunscreen agents from coming into direct contact with the skin. A protective layer lightly resting on top of your skin… yes, please!
Also of note is the SPF 45 X-Treme Cream. The name implies a thick clay-like masque but the product proves otherwise. It smells wonderful, works like a charm and also doubles as an after-sun facial treatment.
Grab a bottle (from the lovely Tigerlily Salon in downtown San Luis Obispo). Apply. And then keep your fingers crossed the sun comes out to play! Enjoying the Mid State Fair at a chilly 65 degrees is just plain wrong.
Ever since reading a piece about taupe-colored nails in Lucky Magazine several months ago, coupled with online features here and here, I have been on the hunt for the perfect taupe-y hue. Why taupe? The wow factor is kicked up a notch from the wildly popular nudes and pinks and it does not have the same harshness as the gun-metal greys and matte black (although I will forever be a fan). On top of it all, the taupe hue still offers a neutral backdrop for loads of brightly colored baubles!
OPI’s You Don’t Know Jacques is a perfect choice, purchased from Salon and Image Center Beauty Supply in Pismo Beach. The darker hue is very reminiscent of mink… sultry, velvety and incredibly elegant. And it acts as a brilliant milieu to this new and lavish cocktail ring recently purchased from the downtown San Luis Obispo Banana Republic. Perfect for Las Vegas!
How do I love thee Santa Barbara? Let me count the ways. Stumbled upon one new reason to love this quintessential California town and that reason is Punch Interieur located on upper State Street in downtown.
[A fantastic vintage jewelry collection.]
[Jam packed with multitude of fabulous trinkets. From spruced-up vintage furniture and local, California-inspired art to gently used old-Hollywood coffee table books.]
[Loved this pave pendant necklace.]
[A pair of the most over-the-top clip on, chandelier earrings I have ever found (four tiers total)… my Grandmother F-G would be proud!]
[A perfect jewelry display complete with a 1950’s doll wig. So classic.]
[Could barely resist the black and white striped vintage chair for $195. Barely.]
I will certainly be making a repeat visit to this adorable, tongue-in-cheek “hip vintage” shop.

The combination of royal blue, white and gold has always appealed to me in a very regal sort of way. Enter in these gold rimmed Ikat bowls “lending an ethnic elan to classically gilded stoneware” from the eternally darling Anthropologie in Santa Barbara ($14 each). The color combo could not be more perfect and the bowls can be used in a variety of ways. In fact, they might just be too pretty for my morning Fruit Loops and Lucky Charms.
P.S. The peach peonies (found for a total steal this week at the Nipomo Vons for $4.99 a bunch) look right at home here. Perhaps this will become a continuous display? Perhaps.
