Hello Labor Day Weekend, Good Bye Summer…but wait. The fun never ends here on the Central Coast. Our local retailers and purveyors are always cooking up new, fun and ah-mazing to-dos to fill up our weekly calendar. Kick the holiday weekend off right with a visit to La Rouge Boutique de Lingerie in downtown San Luis Obispo where owner Farani will be showcasing the latest collection from jewelry company Virgins, Saints and Angels. Plus receive 15% off your purchase.

On Friday, bid farewell to summer with a refreshing and complimentary taste of Pithy Wine Co’s latest addition to the Soda Works family: Cream Soda. The team will be celebrating with delish Cream Soda Floats and sampling some other local goodies, like these.

And end the evening with a visit to downtown San Luis Obispo’s newest fine jeweler Ian Saude. Wine, snacks by the Neon Carrot and yummy desserts. Yes, please! Also be sure to check out the latest and divine collection from Alexis Bittar.

Go Sew Yourself

26 Jul

We all have a little creativity hidden deep within and while it may come natural for some, others flee into a panicked abyss replaying the horrific moment you were forced to create the cotton ball snowman in the third grade.

Don’t fret, the lovely ladies at Birch Organic Cotton Fabrics in downtown Paso Robles will provide you with the tools you need and get your creativity wheels turning again. From designer fabrics to their own custom line and all the sewing tools in between (thread, zippers and sweet patterns by the likes of Amy Butler) you will surely be set.

For those ready to tackle projects but need a little guidance, sign up for one of the many new sewing classes (you bring the machine, they provide you with the materials and you leave with a finished product…voila!):

  • Pretty Little Cosmetics Bag – August 7th @ 12PM, $45pp
  • Baby Steps Quilt – August 14th and 21st @ 12PM, $105pp

Future classes include baby shower gifts (so appropriate considering something recently made its way into the water system, turning every woman in San Luis Obispo county into fertile myrtle), tote bags, potholders, aprons and a-line skirts.

Get your sew on.

Fields of Gold

10 Jun

In February I sat down and did some scrupulous spring cleaning…this included my old, haven’t-been-worn-in-over-two-years-duds (I am a firm believer in that if you haven’t put it on in two years it doesn’t belong in your closet wasting space, unless it happens to be an awesome costume). I instantly knew several of the items would never make the cut so they were lovingly taken to the Goodwill where I bid them farewell, the rest were carefully hung and taken to Finders Keepers in downtown San Luis Obispo to be put on a consignment. Three months later (aka last week) I received a phone call from the darling girls at Finders Keepers explaining that my consignment check and unsold items needed to be picked up. When I arrived I immediately fell in love with this chunky, multi-strand, Roman-esque bracelet from New York based designer, Yochi NY ($44). That’s the great thing about consignment shops, you can take your earnings, turnaround and buy something fresh.

How to wear: layer with additional bracelets of varying gold tones or a masculine, oversized gold watch.

One for One

27 May

I have been lusting after these fishing lure-esque TOMS for weeks now and was tickeled when I came across the pair ($53) at Coalition in downtown San Luis Obispo (which has an incredible selection of this do-good, comfy brand).

How to wear: Pair these cute alternatives to the regular old sneaker with a short, flowy skirt and contrasting top. Or try them with a pair of high waisted shorts and a striped top.

And what is even better? Check out the Coalition site for great coupons, which can be applied to your purchase of TOMS shoes!

ZAC-tastic!

24 Apr

I cannot even begin to describe the shock that overcame me when I stepped into the Paso Robles Target several days ago and instantly saw the Zac Posen sign to my right. Countless questions were running through my mind – “was my internal calendar completely off?”, “had I somehow missed the memo of an early release?”, “was this some sort of a cruel joke?”

Nope. As luck had it the Paso Robles Target received their shipment of the highly coveted Zac Posen for Target line, missed the memo on the April 25th release date and (like proactive employees) set up shop four days ahead of schedule. You can’t knock ‘em for trying to be efficient.

I stood in amazement, looking to my left and right to see if any other Target shoppers had spotted what I had just spotted. The beautifully designed, larger-than-life pieces were untouched, hanging perfectly in order. Some I had seen from the press room release, some I had seen in various ads and some I had never seen before!

I was instantly drawn to the cherry lollipop-red suede and leather cropped biker jacket, the fuchsia wrap dress and the streamlined black and midnight blue tuxedo jacket. But I could not bear to walk away from the oh-so-versatile, multitalented, black and midnight blue 2-in-1 ruffle dress ($79.99), as seen below.

But what the picture above does not show is the beautiful colors, the detail and the craftsmanship put into this piece. Plus the ruffled skirt is detachable and slightly transparent (would look amazing over a black and white striped skirt). I can hardly wait to begin playing with this new find!

The dress/skirt combo came with this darling pictorial of its versatility (in case you couldn’t figure it out).

Hats off to Zac!

Here Comes the Fete!

20 Apr

And so it begins…weddings, baby showers and birthday parties galore! Needless to say my weekends are quickly filling up (as are everyone else’s) and while my closet is booming with lovely pieces from season’s past, it seems to be whispering in my ear “replenish me.”  So lately I have been on the hunt for a new number that screams the word versatility, and with that comes some important criteria:

1. Must be appropriately colored to carry me through spring and into the future holiday season (I hate pieces that are adaptable-y challenged).

2. Must be sleek enough for evening gatherings but subdued enough for day time events.

3. Must be suitably sexy in certain areas but not distracting from the “person” of the hour.

After some time surfing the internet I came across the above number by Elizabeth and James appropriately named “Fete Dresson sale at Diani Boutique in Santa Barbara. The perfect (and multi-seasonal) Cobalt blue, puffy ¾ length sleeves, alluring v-neck and ideal length make the Fete Dress a lovely candidate for my upcoming calendar of events.

Let’s Go Antiquing

15 Apr

There is a girlfriend of mine who I refer to as the Antiquities Queen. From local antique hot spots to Rose Bowl Flea Market expeditions, she covers a lot of territory and always comes home with the most fabulous finds. So when she told me of her recent treasure-hunting success in downtown Paso Robles, I immediately inquired. She responded with “Great American Antiques Mall.”

I have been looking forward to stopping in and finally had the opportunity this week. What I love about antique stores are the myriad of hidden rooms and spaces filled with treasure upon treasure, and the Great American Antiques Mall is no exception.

And even better, the oh-so-friendly staff greets you with “sweetie” and “honey” and is more than willing to help you dig to find exactly what you’re looking for (and trust me, I found what I was looking for but will save that for another post).

These postcards are fantastic and very amusing.

I easily could have spent hours within the trove but was sadly limited to my one-hour lunch break. Nevertheless, the place is overflowing with amazing finds and I can hardly wait to make a repeat visit.
